PE (Physical Education)
Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
At Instow Community Primary School, Physical Education is an integral part of our curriculum that is inclusive and aims to engage all pupils. We have recently adopted a hybrid approach, with children experiencing Real PE as well as more traditional sport-based PE. Through Real PE we help support EVERY child to develop their physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, sport and life. Additionally, children are provided with high-quality PE teaching, sporting learning opportunities and sports provision through a range of means. Our aim at Instow is that every child should have the opportunity to take part in physical activity on a regular basis and become more physically confident and competent. We hope that, through the varied and enriching sporting and outdoor opportunities we offer, children will develop a love and passion for sport, exercise, wellbeing, and self-care that will last a lifetime.
Implementation
Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week, one based on Real PE and the other a traditional PE focus.
• Clear progression and challenge are embedded within the Real PE program.
• All classes take part in the Daily Mile during their day, which helps contribute to the 30 minutes of physical activity at school.
• Children attend swimming lessons in Year 3 with top-up swimming being given to selected swimmers or year groups.
We provide children and staff opportunities to work alongside highly skilled community coaches in a range of sports including basketball, football, and tennis. This also ensures close links for children and staff to sports and facilities within the community.
• We celebrate sporting achievements from both inside and outside school during our weekly achievement assembly.
• PE premium money is carefully budgeted to raise the profile, equipment, and facilities for PE at Instow. This includes ensuring children have built-in exercise opportunities during their play.
• Children participate in a variety of competitive sports as part of ACCT. These festivals incorporate both KS1 and KS2 children.
• We have a whole school Sports Day to celebrate exercise and sport together every summer.
• We offer residential experiences for all KS2 children. These are brimming with OAA, exercise and enrichment opportunities.
Impact
Assessment: The aim of our assessment in PE is to engage, support and motivate pupils to become competent, confident, creative, and reflective movers. This comes in a range of forms, including instant feedback/coaching, self-evaluation tasks, colour-coded difficulty as well as a formal assessment tracking wheel. The intention of this wheel is to show the progression of a particular year group and they should follow each year group throughout their Primary School journey. KS2 children will also be given personal best challenges to set and hopefully beat by the end of a unit. The aim of this is to be child-centred and give the children ownership over their own progression.
Outcomes
• Children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness and many also enjoy the success of competitive sports.
• Children feel encouraged and supported by school to look after their physical health.
• Our children are inspired to have a love of sport and to grow up to have happy and healthy lives, utilising the skills and knowledge they have acquired through PE.
• Our children become stewards of their own learning (both in and out of the classroom) and support their peers to develop and excel in sport and across the curriculum.
• Children show a willingness and ability to try new sports and activities, push themselves and persevere in light of new challenges and resilience.
